Eric Gordon, Jr. (2007)

A North Central athlete remains a great role model in his NBA 12th season

North Central High School boasts a rich tradition of turning out great athletes, as evidenced by the school’s multiple state championships in individual and team sports. Many of the school’s finest athlete have gone on to compete as student athletes in Division I colleges, and some have even ascended to the professional level. Perhaps none, however own an athletic resume exceeding the accomplishments of Erica Gordon, Jr.

Drafted as the seventh overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, “EJ”, as he is known by his friends and family is currently in his 12th season in the NBA. He has averaged 16.7 points per game over the span of his professional career. He has also won about every individual honor one can earn in the game of basketball: 2007 Indiana Mr. Basketball; 2007 McDonald’s High School All-American; 2007 First Team Parade All-American; 2008 Big Ten Freshman of the Year at Indiana University and IU’s all-time leading freshman scorer; 2010 FIBA World Championship gold medal winner; 2016-17 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award; and 2017 NBA Three-Point Contest Champion.

In an era where both the professional and personal lives of athletes are constantly scrutinized and under the microscope of the general public thanks to the prominence of social media, Eric has quietly carried on as the consummate professional. He is not only a highly respected athlete, but he remains a grounded, first class individual. EJ has represented North Central High School and the entire Hoosier state with dignity and class, and he remains a great role model for current and future NCHS Panthers.

And despite his numerous accomplishments and achievements as an athlete over the years – from the time he was a young, budding basketball player at Municipal Gardens to his current status of playing at the highest professional level on the planet – EJ still considered his years at NCHS to be some of the greatest of his life, reflecting back on that period of time with great fondness.

“My first college basketball game, NBA draft night, NBA Rookie Game, winning the USA Gold Basketball World Championship, NBA 3-Point Championship, and the NBA Sixth Man Award were all special moments in time,” he quipped. “But the best time of my life was when I was a high school student at North Central as a student athlete.”

North Central is proud to call Eric Gordon, Jr. on of ours, and we wish him continued success on what has been and will continue to be a truly outstanding career. Best wishes, EJ, from your entire North Central Family!
